SAP HANA SPS03 to SPS05 upgrade

Dear Team,

Good Day!!

I’m in the process of planning SAP Hana database upgrade from SPS03 Revision 25 to SPS05 Revision 47.

I'm referring to the automatic update document and have downloaded all the necessary files.

My Hana DB is on Suse Linux and provider is HP.

I have gone through the attached document of Automatic update and please find below my understanding on how the upgrade has to be performed.

I’m performing the upgrade manually i.e., I’m downloading the required files to my Hana box and perform the upgrade.

  1. 1) We need to download the latest SUM tool(SPS05) for SAP HANA and the SPS05 stack and place it in Hana box. We need to make sure that the SUMHANA*.SAR file should be located in the path where stack.xml file is present(stack.xml file is part of SPS05 stack).

  1. 2) As per the page 12, we are not supposed to start SAP HANA studio from the SAP HANA appliance. So we need to start this from SAP HANA studio(on my desktop) installed on Windows 7 box.

So now is it ok if we update to Internet explorer 9 on Windows 7 machine as we are making use of the SAP HANA studio? Or do we need to install XULRunner 1.9.2 in our Linux where SAP HANA appliance is present?

  1. 3) As per page 8, We have to start SUM for SAP Hana server.(do we need to start the SUM older version(SPS03) which is already installed on the HANA appliance) and we need to start SAP HANA Studio on windows 7. (Is this correct?)

Also when we are starting SUM on HANA(./sum.sh), it is taking to some prompt not sure, if that is the required output.

  1. 4) In Lifecycle management perspective UI, we maintain the file system path where the SPS05 stack.xml and the latest SUM sar file is present. Not sure how the SUM for SAP HANA performs a self-update? Please provide inputs.

  1. 5) then we can proceed with the actual update of the SPS where the update stops the HANA database and performs the update and then start the HANA database in lifecycle management perspective UI?

Please let me know if my understanding is correct.

Thanks & Regards,

Sampath Shankar
